This being our first post, we want to take this opportunity to welcome you, tell you a bit about what we want to do in this tiny bit of real estate on the vast prairie of the Internet. Katryna and I are sisters, moms, musicians, and most recently the authors of a book called All Together Singing in the Kitchen: Creative Ways to Make and Listen to Music as a Family. The book is a how to (with lots of creative ideas about how to incorporate music into your family’s days and nights) and a why to (with lots of our opinions as to why music just makes everything better, stronger, more resonant and more fun, and most importantly why it creates the best family bonds.) We have also been running an early childhood music class called HooteNanny for the past five years, and our book draws extensively on our experiences in this class. We want to share what we have been doing in our classroom with families all over the country. Hence, this blog.
Our intention is to post regularly, with Katryna and Nerissa alternating weekdays. We want to mix up practical posts about how to make, say, a cardboard guitar with anecdotes about our lives as professional folk musicians raising (between us) four (musical) kids. We hope this space will be a clearinghouse for all ideas about the musical family, and to that end, we welcome other family musicians to send us CDs for review. And once we have fully mastered the technology, we will be posting videos of us singing lullabies to your kids–just in case you need an extra couple of voices to lull your little one to sleep.
Please write to us and let us know how we are doing, and what you want to hear more (or less) about.
Thanks for visiting!
Love, Nerissa & Katryna
